Our Mission

The Big Chair Chess Club Youth Chess League (YCL) is committed to empowering young minds through chess by fostering team spirit, social and emotional learning (SEL), and strategic thinking. Our mission is to build vibrant chess communities that cultivate excellence, sportsmanship, and academic success. We provide mentorship, competitive chess development, and personal growth opportunities, ensuring that each player thrives both on and off the board. Target school group 1st grade to 12th grade, age focus 6 to 18.

Vision

Our vision is to establish a dynamic and inclusive chess league where every team builds its own unique culture, identity, and spirit. Each team will develop its own branding, including a team name and mascot, represented by a dedicated team coach or parent who fosters leadership and growth. By integrating chess with education, teamwork, and life skills, YCL aims to instill confidence, discipline, and resilience in young players. We envision a future where every school and community has access to high-quality chess training, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and lifelong learning.

Tournament Dates

Every last Saturday of the month
8:30am - 5pm
Check-in 8:30am- 9am
1st Rd starts at 9:15am

Paid parking garage. Nearest Across the street Metro Van Ness-UDC

Cost: $60 Per Person

Must pay online no cash at event. Limited space register while space is available.

Chess Coaches Breakout Session

After the 1st round players will have the opportunity to work with their coaches on their 1st game or option to meet in a large group session with coaches to go over selected game or topic for the day.

Pairing & Format

Players will be grouped into quads (groups of four) based on their LIVE Over-the-Board (OTB) rating.
Pairings will begin with the four highest-rated players and continue down to the lowest-rated players.
Only LIVE OTB ratings will be used for pairing purposes.

Time Control & Quad Rules

Must Have USCF ID To Play Games are Rated
Open to 1st grade to 12th grade
Notation Required
Each Quad plays three rounds (G/60, D5).
Round 2 & Round 3 will begin 5 minutes after the completion of the previous round.
Times 1st Rd 9:15am, Chess Coaches / Mentor Sessions 11:15am - 12pm, Lunch 12:15pm, 2nd Rd 1:15pm, 3rd Rd 3:15pm
Players may leave immediately after completing their third game.
