How to Register or Connect To Online Tournaments

It's easy as 123.

General Online Chess Tournament Rules

General Fair Play

  • All games must be played on the official tournament platform as designated by the organizers.
  • Players must play honestly without the use of any assistance from chess engines, databases, other players, or any outside resources.
  • Any player found to be violating fair play rules will be disqualified, and results may be reported to the hosting platform’s moderators (e.g., Lichess, Chess).

Tiebreak System

  • Tiebreaks will be calculated using the Sonneborn–Berger method (sum of the scores of defeated opponents plus half the scores of drawn opponents).
  • If players remain tied after this calculation, Lichess performance ratings will be used as the secondary tiebreak.
  • If ties still remain unresolved, the tournament director may schedule a playoff or blitz/armageddon game at their discretion.

Tournament Format & Time Control

  • The tournament format, time control, and pairing system will be announced before the first round.
  • Players are responsible for knowing the schedule and being online at least 10 minutes before the start of each round.
  • Late arrival may result in forfeiting the game.

Player Identification

  • Players must register with their real name and official platform username before the tournament.
  • Using multiple accounts during the event is strictly prohibited.

Technical Issues

  • Players are responsible for ensuring a stable internet connection and a functioning device.
  • Disconnections during the game will be treated as a loss unless the platform rules allow reconnection within the time control.
  • No rematches will be granted due to individual technical failures.

Touch-Move & Premoves

  • Online chess allows premoves; however, players should ensure they understand how these features work before the tournament.
  • No “take-backs” are allowed once a move is made.

Platform Rules

  • All participants must adhere to the fair play guidelines of the hosting platform (e.g., Lichess Fair Play Policy, Chess.com Fair Play Policy).
  • The tournament organizer has the final say on disputes.

Streaming & Recording

  • Players are permitted to stream or record their games, but should avoid giving or receiving any outside assistance during the live broadcast.
  • Organizers may request cameras on for higher-level events to ensure fair play.

Penalties for Violations

  • First offense: Warning (at the organizer’s discretion)
  • Second offense: Immediate game loss
  • Severe offenses (e.g., cheating, abusive behavior): Disqualification and potential ban from future events.

Final Authority

  • The Tournament Director’s decision is final on all matters of rules, disputes, and fair play enforcement.
