At Big Chair Chess Club, we believe chess can be more than a game—it can become a pathway to educational opportunity. Through competitive chess tournaments and structured training, students develop the skills needed to compete for recognition, awards, and scholarship opportunities.
Our programs prepare students to participate in local, state, and national chess tournaments, where strong performance can open doors to academic recognition and educational support.
Through tournament participation, students build discipline, critical thinking skills, and strategic decision-making—qualities that support success both on the chessboard and in the classroom.

Empowering Underserved Youth Through Chess
The Eugene Brown Scholarship is designed to support underserved youth with exceptional potential—students whose gifted minds are revealed through chess.
In this competition, youth battle it out on the board—where only the strongest minds rise to the top. More than a tournament, this is an opportunity for students to turn their talent into real pathways for college, trade school, and future success.
This competition challenges students to demonstrate:
These are not just chess skills—they are essential life skills and the true attributes of champions.
Through this scholarship, students are not only competing—they are proving their readiness for the next level in life.
At Big Chair Chess Club, we believe that when given the opportunity, gifted minds from underserved communities can rise, lead, and succeed.
The Maryland Sweet 16 Chess Championship is a prestigious scholastic tournament that features 16 of the top K-12 chess players in Maryland competing in a special championship section held in conjunction with the UMBC Open.
The winner of the Maryland Sweet 16 earns a four-year chess scholarship opportunity to attend the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
This tournament highlights how strong performance in scholastic chess can lead to real academic opportunities at the collegiate level. Programs like UMBC actively recruit talented chess players and offer scholarships to students who demonstrate both academic commitment and competitive chess ability.
Events such as the Maryland Sweet 16 help students see how chess can become a pathway to college opportunities, recognition, and scholarship support.

In these events, each state selects a representative champion to compete at the national level, making them some of the most prestigious scholastic competitions in the country.
These tournaments not only recognize top chess talent but also provide educational opportunities, national recognition, and scholarship pathways for student players who excel in competitive chess.
Programs like Big Chair Chess Club help prepare students to pursue these opportunities by developing the tournament experience, strategy, and discipline required to compete at state and national levels.
