Chess In Prison Initiative

Support Big Chair Chess Club Today

    ♟ Prison & Justice-Involved Chess Initiative

    Always Think B4U Move

At Big Chair Chess Club, we are committed to transforming lives through the power of chess—especially for youth impacted by the justice system. Our Prison & Justice-Involved Chess Initiative creates structured opportunities for personal growth, critical thinking, and positive decision-making in secure and reentry environments.

Through strategic partnerships and consistent on-site programming, we bring chess education, mentorship, and life skills development directly to youth who need it most.

    🏛 Program Reach & Locations

We are proud to have provided chess programming and mentorship in collaboration with leading institutions and facilities, including:

    • DYRS Youth Services Center (YSC) – Washington, D.C.
Supporting detained youth with foundational and advanced chess instruction, promoting discipline, patience, and strategic thinking.

    • DYRS New Beginnings Youth Development Center – Washington, D.C.
Engaging committed youth in deeper learning, leadership development, and long-term thinking through structured chess curriculum.

🧠 Why Chess in Justice-Involved Spaces?

Chess is more than a game—it is a tool for transformation. Our programming helps youth:

    • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills

    • Practice accountability and consequence-based decision-making

    • Build patience, focus, and emotional control

    • Strengthen confidence and self-worth

    • Learn how to Think B4U Move in both chess and life

🌱 Pathways to Growth & Opportunity

Our initiative goes beyond instruction—we aim to create pathways for the future, including:

    • Exposure to educational and scholarship opportunities through chess

    • Exploration of career pathways in STEM, leadership, and entrepreneurship

    • Opportunities to participate in tournaments, mentorship, and peer leadership

    • Collaboration with partners to pursue grant funding for career development and program sustainability

    🤝 Our Commitment

We believe every young person deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, and redefine their future. Through chess, we provide a structured, empowering environment where youth can rebuild confidence, sharpen their minds, and prepare for life beyond the system.

    📣 Get Involved

We are actively seeking partners, sponsors, and supporters to expand this initiative and reach more youth across the region.

Together, we can change lives—one move at a time.
